March 2015
March was a very busy month for the Pioneer Pipeline. This month was filled with huge accomplishments for the program. Due to the busy schedule and the different breaks this month, this article will summarize the entire month of March. During the first part of the month Marietta College was on spring break so the students got to experience an empty college campus. During the week the students went to the local YMCA to swim as a class. After swimming the kids went to McDonald’s to eat lunch. The kids still were able to use all of the facilities of the campus including the gathering place and recreation center. Playing darts, pool, and foosball were some of the activities got to do at the gathering place. They mentees really enjoyed the week, but missed their peer mentors and were excited for them to get back. When the peer mentors got back on campus they were excited to get back to work. Peer mentors planned various activities with the kids such as making a pizza in McCoy Hall. The peer mentors and students went to the local grocery store and bought a pizza. Each student made their own home made pizza. All of the mentees continued their internships around the campus and community. Lauren has really enjoyed her time at the Marietta College Legacy Library. She has really improved her skills and has developed good relationships with her co-workers. Anna has continued working in the Education Department and Andrews Hall working in Student Life. Anna and Brandon cut out letters for bulletin boards and deliver mail. During the month of March, the Pioneer Pipeline Program was awarded the ACRES Exemplary Program Award for Vocational Training and Transition. The American Council for Rural Special Education (ACRES) is a national organization that has shown our program recognition for all the hard work the aides, students, and peer mentors do on a daily basis. Mr. Alexander was able to travel to New Orleans to accept the award and attend ACRES Conference. ACRES is a non-profit organization comprised of special educators, general educators, related service providers, administrators, teacher trainers, researchers, and parents who are committed to the enhancement of services to students and individuals living in rural America. ACRES is the only national organization devoted entirely to special education issues that affect rural America. After the conference he presented on behalf of the Pioneer Pipeline at the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) state conference in Columbus. The last month of March is Warren High School’s spring break, the mentees will not be on campus. The program will start again April 7th when school resumes.
